Anime Review: Dragon Half
Morgan De Sena
Issue date: 1/18/08 Section: Campus Life
Mink is the daughter of a dragon and a human dragon slayer. Pop-star Dick Saucer, Mink's idol who unfortunately hates dragons, is holding a concert! Mink sets out on a journey to find tickets to the concert. During all this, the corrupt King Civa tries to kidnap Mink so that he can kill her father and marry her mother. Princess Vina, the King's half-slime, black magic-wielding daughter, goes out of her way to defeat Mink and to make her life miserable, as she is Mink's rival for Dick Saucer's affection. Then they enter a martial arts tournament. Yeah, it's pretty random.
Dragon Half is a very crazy anime that is a grand-whopping total of two episodes long. Despite its brevity, it is FILLED to capacity with hilarity and strangeness. The story ends very abruptly, even though there was not much plot to begin with anyway so it works quite well as a two-episode series. The artwork is just as random as the show, with characters switching back and forth from "super-deformed" to normal bodies. The music is also weird, especially the closing song "My Omelette" which is sung by Mink to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. The song is pretty much a string of nonsensical words, with the occasional request to keep the tomato in exchange for the octopus. Dragon Half is a very hilarious, random show.
The Stevens Anime Club will be showing Dragon Half this Friday at 9 p.m. in Burchard 118 as a part of Prolegomenon tradition, along with previews of Le Chevalier D'eon, Outlaw Star, Love Hina and more!
