Men's fencing posts successful weekend

The Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team competed Saturday at the University of Pennsylvania multi-meet in Philadelphia, Pa. The Ducks went 1-2 on the day with a win over Sacred Heart University (14-13) and two defeats to Johns Hopkins University (8-19) and Pennsylvania (22-5). Stevens then returned home to host its own invitational on Sunday as they defeated Yeshiva University (22-3), Hunter College (23-4) and New Jersey Institute of Technology (19-8).
Saturday
In the match against Sacred Heart, sophomore David Barth
led the way in sabre having posted a perfect 3-0 in his bout, as he finished the day 5-4. Senior Brian Weiner went 1-2 against Sacred Heart and finished the day 3-6.
The foil team was lead by junior Lowden Charles who registered two flawless bouts of 3-0 against Johns Hopkins and Sacred Heart. He ended the day 7-2 as he went 1-2 against Pennsylvania. The Ducks received a solid performance from junior Ben Hochberg, who went 4-5 on the day.
In epee, sophomore Steve DiPaola went 2-1 against conference rival Johns Hopkins as he finished the competition 3-6.
"This was a good experience for us to fence top-notch teams," said Head Coach Mika'il Sankofa "I believe that it inspired us to raise our level of play; as this will only help us get stronger."
Sunday
The Ducks used their experience from the previous day to sweep the competition on their home floor. Against Hunter both the foil and sabre squads posted a perfect 9-0 showing as epee finished 5-4. In their match against Yeshiva, the foil team repeated with another flawless scoring of 9-0 as epee improved with an 8-1 finish against the Maccabees. The sabre team, led by Barth had a great showing as they finished 7-2 against Yeshiva.
In Stevens final match against NJIT, both the sabre and epee teams recorded finishes of 6-3. The foil team, led by Charles, finished the day with a 7-2 victory over the Highlanders.
"We did everything we worked on in order to defend our turf," said Sankofa. "Our true test will be our next competition at the New York University Invitational as we prep and look forward to having a solid performance."
The Ducks return to action on Saturday, January 26 at 8 a.m. as they compete in the NYU Invitational. Stevens will be tested as they battle Division I universities consisting of Ohio State, Yale, Columbia, Notre Dame, Wayne State and St. John's.
