Dr. Helena S. Wisniewski, Vice President of University Research & Enterprise Development at Stevens Institute of Technology, was selected to serve on a United States Naval Research Advisory Committee (NRAC). Wisniewski will serve for six years alongside 14 other researchers. The committee members were selected by Donald C. Winter, Secretary of the Navy, in concurrence with Robert Gates, Secretary of Defense.
Wisniewski has a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Graduate Center at the City University of New York and a Master's of Science in Mathematics from Stevens. Her dissertation at CUNY dealt with non-linear dynamics.
NRAC will serve as the senior advisory group to Secretary Winter. Its objectives include providing "independent advice and recommendations on scientific, technical, and research and development matters confronting the U. S. Navy and U. S. Marine Corps" Wisniewski's term started in September, of this year. During her term she will work to identify new technologies that will solve problems and mitigate risks to the Navy.
The committee formally meets four times a year. In addition, there is a summer study program for two weeks in San Diego, California. In the course of its work, NRAC will also conduct annual site visits to naval facilities. In February, they will visit the Pacific Fleet. As of September 23, the specific roles for the committee members were still under discussion. One possible role that Wisniewski may receive, as a member, would be leading one of the study panels that they will continue to discuss both the formation of and structure at their December meeting.
Wisniewski said that "Stevens has a rich tradition with the Navy through Davidson labs and the current effort through the Maritime Systems laboratory" and she hopes to continue that tradition with her work on NRAC. She remarked that "I would feel very gratified if I have made a major contribution to our national security by ensuring we maintain a technological advantage." NRAC has representatives from major corporations, and universities, as well as former assistant secretaries and government officials.
