Freshman outside hitter Sarah Byrne led the 20th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team to its 21st win of the season as the Ducks rolled past the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (7-12) in three games (30-17, 33-31, 30-19) earlier this evening in Kings Point, N.Y. Byrne posted 12 kills and seven digs as Stevens served-up 14 aces on the night.
Sophomore outside hitter Laura Johnson
recorded nine kills and a pair of aces in the victory, while freshman setter Sara Budar registered 13 assists. Freshman setter Brittany Conroy had her fair share of assists having totaled 11 on the night, including two service aces. Senior right-side hitter JoAnne Pojuner finished with five kills as freshman right-side hitter Maggie Majcher accumulated four kills and a pair of aces.
Stevens has recently earned the No. 1 New York Region ranking by the NCAA for Division III women's volleyball. The Ducks are one of four Empire 8 teams that were ranked in the top eight for the region. Nazareth College (19-4), Rochester Institute of Technology (19-7) and Cortland State (18-6) round out the top four in the New York Region, respectively.
Stevens will return to action this Friday as it travels to Cortland, N.Y. for the second time to compete in the SUNY Cortland Invitational starting Friday evening at 4 p.m. as they take on the Knights of SUNY Geneseo. The Ducks captured the tournament title when they visited Cortland earlier in the season at the annual SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Classic. Dawn Herring and Jessica Gardner were named to the 2007 Red Dragon Classic all-tournament team while Melissa Rhode was voted the tournament MVP.
