Every year, the five most recent graduating classes from the Stevens Alumni Association vote on who should receive the Teacher of the Year Award. "Excellence in teaching implies a high level of success in imparting knowledge and understanding to students," Ed Eichhorn, President of the Stevens Alumni Association, explained. He continued, "it must also be judged according to 1. The degree and quality of inspiration engendered in the students; 2. The effectiveness of the motivation and preparation of the students for their professional careers, and 3. The extent to which intellectual integrity and professional ethics are instilled in the students... This year, students have selected Professor Harry Heffes, of the Stevens Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering."
Professor Heffes came to Stevens in 1990 after spending 28 years at AT&T Bell Labs. He has worked on projects such as the Apollo Lunar Landing Program where he applied modern control and estimation theory to problems related to guidance, navigation, tracking and trajectory optimization.
He is the author of over 25 papers in areas including voice and data communication networks, overload control for distributed switching systems and queuing and teletraffic theory, among others.
In the past Professor Heffes has received the Bell Labs Distinguished Technical Staff Award in 1983 as well as the IEEE Communication Society's S.O. Rice Prize in 1986. Professor Heffes is also a Fellow of the IEEE and also served as a U.S. delegate to the International Teletraffic Congress.
He earned masters and doctoral degrees in 1964 and 1968, respectively, from NYU.
Authors note: as a past student, congrats are well deserved!
