The staff here at Stevens do all they can to ensure that students are adequately prepared for anything they might encounter after graduation. The Class of 2008 Career Day, held on Wednesday, September 26, assisted graduating students in their search for full time employment by providing them with the opportunity to interact and build relationships with representatives from leading companies in their associated industries. Held in the Canavan Arena of the Schaefer Athletic Center, 130 companies were represented. Sponsors included Barclays Capital, Hudson River Trading, Morgan Stanley, Sims Group and The Vanguard Group.
Held on the last Wednesday in September, the annual Career Day offers graduating students, both undergraduate and graduate, a chance to look for full-time career opportunities. Showcasing both employers and potential employees in one venue, it's a convenient scenario for everyone involved: companies are looking for qualified people to work for them while Stevens students are looking for careers in industries and businesses that interest them. Companies were arranged so that related industries were grouped together and students rarely had a far distance to walk. Further, a number of companies had small giveaways as a means of drawing attention to interested students.
Lynn Insley, Director of the Office of Career Development, said that she felt this fair was a success before it even ended. Canavan Arena was filled to capacity (though two companies registered but could not make it) and students filled the Arena throughout the event. Insley also mentions being complimented by an employer on the professional appearance and presentation of Stevens students as well as the variety of majors that were represented at the fair. Though it may be too early to see specific, quantitative results from the Career Day, the outcome is certainly promising.
The Office of Career Development also hosts two additional career fairs throughout the year. The Annual Career Fair will be held on December 5, 2007 and is open to all students and features full-time and some internship openings. The Spring Career Day, held in March, is also open to all students and provides the same opportunities but generally features more summer internships. For more information on the career fairs, other work experience and job placement opportunities, visit the Office of Career Development website at www.stevens.edu/ocs or stop by their office on the Sixth Floor of the Howe Center.
