"What the 'F'?"
This comical catchphrase, used by mentalist and illusionist Wayne Hoffman, was just one of many exclamations that would be heard in Bissinger last Thursday night. Thanks to efforts put forth by the Entertainment Committee as well as one very impressed student, Hoffman was the guest star for a very eager Stevens community.
After a brief introduction by the Entertainment Committee, Hoffman dove quickly into his act. He began by performing some quick tricks, one of which involved him stating he would throw a plane into the audience, and whomever it poked in the eye would go on stage. Almost supernaturally, the plane landed right on mark in the face of a stunned student. The student walked on stage, stated a random number and his name, and Hoffman proceeded to tell the student to look on the edge of the paper plane. He did, and his name, as well as the number he had just chosen, were written on the plane. Hoffman's only response: "What the 'F'?" as he smiled slyly.
After he sent the student away, he had one more go at the paper airplane, threw it into the sky, and it landed right in the first row, on yet another unsuspecting student. She hesitantly got up and approached the stage. Her job was easy, when Hoffman asked her to name any vegetable. After a brief moment, she responded with the word broccoli, and Hoffman smiled. He walked to a small table that stood alone center stage, and he grabbed a dry erase board. He turned it around so it was facing the audience and upon it, in big black letters was one word: Broccoli.
Now the act was heating up. After much applause, Hoffman moved on to his next trick, introducing it with a brief discussion of the dictionary. He expressed his excitement of looking through the dictionary and finding words that he would never use in real life. Tonight's word? Caracul. This word, which Hoffman insisted he might use on only one occasion, is apparently used to describe the curly coat of a certain type of sheep.
