Freshman forward Lauren Griggs netted the eventual game-winning goal with less than seven minutes remaining in the second overtime period Saturday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team secured a 2-1 victory against Kean University.
The Ducks (4-1) opened up the scoring in the final minute of the opening stanza when sophomore forward Kara Borzillo punched a shot from the far-right wing of the circle into the left corner of the cage.
The Cougars (3-1), who out-shot Stevens by a 24-13 count on the evening, retaliated in the 53rd-minute when senior forward Alli Green chipped a shot off a cross-pass from freshman forward Amie Hoch into the right side of the net.
After a scoreless first overtime, Stevens closed out the game in the second extra period. Griggs deflected a Stephanie Linder shot into the right corner of the net to give the Ducks a 2-1 win.
Stevens' junior keeper Stephanie Smith stopped a game-high 12 shots, while Kean sophomore goaltender Jenni Barry turned two shots aside.
