State of the Institute

Issue date: 9/14/07 Section: Campus News
When Provost Korfiatis arrived at Kidde 228 on September 10 to give the second annual State of the Institute address, his first comment was to the effect of, "where is everybody?" The large lecture hall was far from filled; the audience consisted of a couple of student leaders, a small amount of press, and a small number of faculty and administrators. The poor attendance, however, is not at all an indication the importance of the contents of the speech.
The Student Government Association (SGA) invited the Provost to speak on the State of the Institute, however the Provost started his speech by commenting that the people who invited him to speak were not even there.
President of the SGA, Mike Manzella, who arrived late to the speech (after the Provost's comment), commented on the poor attendance, "I think it was probably too early in the semester to have this kind of event. People are still getting used to their schedules and might not have remembered this was happening, especially with it being on a Monday afternoon."
The Provost first focused on an issue of great importance to students: the realignment of the schools. The former Arthur E. Imperatore School of Sciences and Arts has been realigned into the Schaefer School of Engineering and Sciences and into the College of Arts & Letters. Korfiatis revealed that the faculty and administration has been working toward this realignment for two years as part of a greater focus on the "Research and Doctoral Studies Enterprise" of the Institute.
Korfiatis stressed that the undergraduate programs at the Institute are not affected by the change. The only differences to be seen in an undergraduate program is the possibility of different professors teaching courses and "integration" between departments at the Senior Design level.
This focus on Research and Doctoral Studies comes after resources over the last 10-15 years were mostly devoted to the other two enterprises of the Institute, Undergraduate Education and Masters and Professional Studies.
