Sophomore Kara Borzillo scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 67th minute Friday night as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey squad defeated 14th-ranked Juniata College by a 2-1 count in the season-opener as well as Day One of the 2007 Stevens Field Hockey Tournament.
Stevens (1-0) opened up the scoring just before time expired in the first half when sophomore forward and 2006 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year Courtney Geddis pushed a three-yard shot into the right side of the cage on a feed from junior defenseman Casey Scherck.
In the second stanza, Juniata (0-1) retaliated with a score of its own at the 12:18 mark as senior forward Leslie Stern took the ball down the left side of the field and proceeded to put a six-yard shot past Ducks' goaltender Ellyn Griggs to knot the contest up at 1-1.
Nine minutes later, Stevens put the game away for good when junior midfielder Hillary Paul found Borzillo in front of the net. Borzillo placed a two-yard tally past Juniata keeper Abby Funk.
Funk made a game-high four saves for the Eagles, while Griggs stopped one and got the win in the decision.
