Sophomore forward Kara Borzillo recorded a goal and two assists (four points) Wednesday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team won its third game in a row, blanking Western Connecticut State University, 3-0.
The Ducks (3-0), who out-shot the Colonials (1-1) by a 45-4 count in the contest, reached the scoreboard first in the 26th-minute when junior midfielder Hillary Paul, who accumulated a game-high 18 shots in the match, placed a 15-yard shot from the far-right wing into the left corner of the cage off of a feed from Borzillo.
In the closing half, Stevens took a 2-0 advantage when junior midfielder Allison Shields connected on a shot from the top of the circle off of a corner-pass from Borzillo with 13:57 remaining. One minute later, Borzillo found the back of the cage when she pushed a shot into the left corner of the net off of a cross-pass from sophomore forward Courtney Geddis.
Ducks' junior keeper Stephanie Smith made two saves in her first start of the season, while Colonials rookie goaltender Sandra Vermeulen turned aside a game-high 24 shots.
Head Coach Jessica Reed and her squad return to action this Saturday when they travel to Selinsgrove, Pa., to do battle with Susquehanna University. The opening face-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
