Undergraduate Scholars who performed research over the summer with a faculty professor gave presentations to the Class of 2011 freshmen Scholars on Wednesday September 5. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., students from across all disciplines offered at Stevens Institute of Technology presented research ranging from the anti-icing properties of the nano-structures of plant waxes to the analysis of popularity trends in internet multimedia. The Scholars program is Stevens' honor program that invites the top 10% of the annual admitted students to apply to the program.
Once admitted into the program they are obligated to take either honor classes in mathematics or computer science or seminars in business, physics, chemistry or chemical biology. In addition to the above honors classes and seminars they are obligated to take research seminars. They are also required to attend the research seminars during their freshman year and have to take a honors course or seminar during their freshman semesters. During their fourth semester they are required to take another research seminar. During the summer, Scholars may choose to conduct research with a professor at Stevens while living on campus or take four classes over the two summer sessions free of charge.
That is the research that was presented in the event to the newest generation of Stevens Scholars. Professor Ed Whittaker of the Physics and Engineering Physics Department and the Director of the Stevens Scholars Program gave a speech in the middle introducing the Scholars program to the freshman and congratulating the undergraduate researchers for their effort. Pat Gleeson, a staff contributor to the Stute and a Scholar in the Mechanical Engineering Department, said "The presentations showed the diverse and fascinating projects that students have the opportunity to work on through the Scholars program." A question and answer session with Dean Erol Cesmebasi and Whittaker concluded the session.
