Awesome. That is the only word that can describe our experience at the grand opening of Tokugawa Sushi. Tokugawa is located at 1120 Washington Street (that is between 11th and 12th streets) and is offering 15% off all dine-in and take-out orders until September 30th.
Like most other restaurants in Hoboken, Tokugawa offers both indoor and outdoor seating. We chose to dine inside and were pleased with our choice. The dining room is a normal size for Hoboken - small - however the artistic tables are not crammed in and thus elbow room is maximized while the noise level is kept reasonably low. The white walls feature few tasteful pictures which gives you plenty of time to focus on what is important - the food.
To start, we tried the Miso soup and a Yellowtail roll. Tokugawa's Miso soup was different then others we've tried in that it was full of tasty Japanese mushrooms. The Yellowtail was a simple appetizer roll, which was fresh and arrived from the kitchen quickly.
For an entrée Mike tried something new and went with Chicken Katsu. The dish consisted of two deep fried boneless chicken breasts with Katsu dipping sauce. The chicken breasts were phenomenal, tasting like an upscale chicken nugget. The Katsu sauce was similar to a barbeque sauce. The dish also came with a small salad on the plate and a side of rice. The Chicken Katsu is a dish we would recommend to everyone: It's great for those of you who are just testing the waters of exotic cuisines and is also a delicious entrée to pair with a sushi roll for the seasoned diner.
Kelsea decided to further explore Tokugawa's sushi and ordered the Imperial roll. This roll contained eel, avocado, shrimp tempura, and spicy tuna wrapped in marble seaweed. The presentation of the dish was beautiful. The marble seaweed itself is a pretty light green and the pieces were arranged in a star configuration on a white square plate. The sushi was as good as it looked - the fish was fresh and the combination was delectable. We have tried a lot of sushi while living in Hoboken, and Tempura shrimp rolls have consistently been our favorite.
The service was very quick and the prices were reasonable. The Chicken Katsu entrée was $12.00 and was very filling. The roll was $12.50 and the total of the entire dinner was $29. We definitely recommend trying out this new restaurant while they are offering the great deal of 15% off!
