The latest movie in the Spiderman franchise is an action packed summer blockbuster. Tobey Maguire returns in the title role, and is rejoined by Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco for this third installment.
The movie begins approximately where the third movie left off, except now Peter Parker, (Maguire), has pretty much gotten his act together.
The doubts about his calling, the focus of the second film, are gone.
Parker now is able to balance his job as Spiderman, and college student with great ease; even more important, he is able to make a relationship with Mary Jane, (Dunst), work.
Happiness, unfortunately, is not to be long lived for Parker, as very quickly things take a turn for the worse. With the arrival of a new black spiderman suit, Parker becomes far more aggressive and unkind.
This, coupled with the arrival of Sandman, and the return of Green Goblin, lead to more than just a strain on Parker's relationship with Mary Jane.
In sum, Spiderman 3 is an enjoyable movie, but it is definitely not good cinema. The plot line seems to be a simple rehash of the second film, with Parker being torn about his motives, and his responsibilities. The fight sequences are excellent, and the action will definitely keep one's attention. And, there is more than enough humor to keep one entertained.
As with the other two movies, it is clear that the director does not take the movie too seriously; it's a superhero movie, not a high drama, something that other movies in this genre sometimes have the tendency to forget.
Spiderman 3 can be seen in Burchard 118 on Sunday September 3 at 8:30 p.m. and on Monday and Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. Final Score: 8/10
