Over the weekend, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's golf team competed in the final two rounds of the 2006-07 Empire 8 Championship. The spring portion of the event was held at the Mark Twain Golf Course (6,857 yard - par 72) in Elmira, N.Y. The first 36 holes of the tournament took place in September 2006 at the Blue Heron Hills Golf Club in Macedon, N.Y.

St. John Fisher College captured its third straight Empire 8 title with a four-round team total of 1,184. Nazareth College was second at 1,344. Elmira College finished third with a score of 1,368. Stevens ended up fourth overall with a total team score of 1,392. Utica College closed out the field with a 1,524.

Junior Scott Harris, Jr. of St. John Fisher was the individual champion with a four-round total of 286, which was good enough for even-par. The Cardinals boasted the top three individual finishers.

Stevens played very well en route to posting a 665 team score over the third and fourth rounds, which was second only to St. John's Fisher's 594 for this weekend's play. In fact, the Ducks' 330 on Sunday represented the team's lowest one-round total ever.

On Saturday, Stevens posted a team score of 335, which was good enough for second place on the day and fourth place in the overall standings. The Cardinals led the way with a 301 in the third round. Elmira was third on the day at 348. Nazareth (354) and Utica (385) finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

The Ducks were led by junior Tom Merriam and sophomore Ryan Cohen, who both posted an 81. Junior Chris Dunderdale added an 83. Junior Scott Mozeleski and senior Jake Heffernan both shot a 90. In the overall standings, Merriam climbed from 12th place to eighth. Mozeleski, who was tied with Merriam after the first two rounds, was ninth after 54 holes.

On Sunday, Cohen shot a sizzling three-over par 75, which set a Stevens single-round record for lowest score. The highlight of his round was back-to-back chip-in birdies on the sixth and seventh holes. In addition, Cohen's two-round total of 156 from the weekend was good enough for sixth place as he set a new school record for lowest score over 36 holes.

Stevens also received a solid performance from Dunderdale, who recorded an 83 on Sunday. Heffernan and Merriam tallied 86's. Mozeleski added an 88.

Both Merriam and Mozeleski earned second-team Empire 8 honors this season. Only those individuals that competed in all four rounds of the tournament were eligible for all-conference consideration.

Stevens will close out its first varsity season on Monday, April 30 as the Ducks host Centenary College, Yeshiva University and New York University at Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station, N.J.
