He shall from time to time give to the student body information of the state of the Institution. Though that clause is not written into the Stevens mission statement, George Korfiatis, Provost and University Vice President of Stevens Institute of Technology, recently delivered his first "State of the Institution Address" to the student body on Monday, April 23 at 4 p.m. in Kidde 228.
Korfiatis started his address by comparing Stevens to a company which produces students with a higher understanding of the world around them along with producing knowledge through research. Korfiatis then spoke about the three enterprises that Stevens is part of. He spoke about the investment and maintenance of the undergraduate and graduate fields along with the investment and transformations in research doctoral studies that the institute undertakes. Korfiatis said that it was the duty of the office of the Provost to strategically plan the enhancement of these fields. Korfiatis said that he would focus on four priority areas such as finance, policies & procedures, research enterprise, and footprint & impact. He described his job as the "Chief Academic Officer of the school."
The first priority area focused on budgeting and process control. He said that he would work with the institute to create a new budgeting process that would include control steps and monitors. He also said the institute would turn out an Institute Pulse Report which would focus on various factors such as research, enrollment, financials, intellectual property, etc. The second dealt with policies such as a review of the academic functions and the institutional services Stevens as an institute can provide. Research & enterprise focused on developing strategies and founding research centers and institutes in order to expand programs such as doctoral research. The footprint focused on Stevens' Global Presence and Investments along with networking opportunities and academic leadership.
Korfiatis then spoke on the operating structure of the school noting such things as the Budgeting Committee, the Academic and Administrative Councils, and the roles of the President, Provost and Deans. Stevens has undertaken short-term actions regarding the balancing of the budget, filling open positions, formation of focus groups for review and Development and Improvement of a comprehensive assessment program. Some of these actions include increases in undergraduate revenue by 5%, undergraduate attendance, graduate revenue by $2 million a year, applications and acceptances.
