Boken 2007, or "A Benefit for Absolutely Nothing," is going on this week on campus. The week kicked off Monday with the State of the School address from Provost Korfiatis. Monday night was Say What Karaoke and Tuesday night was the Battle of the Bands, which were both cosponsored by WCPR. Wednesday's Fat Camp and Movie Night were both rained out. As a result, 100 burritos that were planned for Fat Camp were given away on Schaffer Lawn to the enjoyment of a few lucky passer-bys. Thursday night's activities included a coffeehouse and Latin night. Friday night's plans include comedy night and an Anime Club marathon. Saturday is going to be the rain date for Fat Camp, Off-Center, and the C2GS IDKFA LAN extravaganza. The week wraps up on Sunday morning with the SITtv Film Festival and RHA Super Coffeehouse.
Originally planned for last week, Boken was postponed due to the "beautification of campus" for the President's Tea. They were going to move it to the week before the beautification but due to UNITY, they decided to put Boken after the President's Tea instead. The Boken committee was first given $35,000 to set up this week, but ended up going under budget by about $10,000. The extra money is going towards the Midnight Breakfast to procure a band. The reason for the extra money was that the change of dates caused many of the bands initially scheduled for Boken to back out relatively quickly. According to Steven Lapitka, one of the chairs of Boken, one band decided to go from $6,000 for the event to $10,000 in a matter of a week.
One of the earliest ideas for a Boken theme was "Benefiting Greek Week." However the two chairs decided that they "weren't going to go with anything related to the theme [as an event] so we decided no theme." The events this week have had a few problems, but Lapitka, and Eric Eisenhardt are still hopeful. The problems include a low attendance for Say What Karaoke due to the Candlelight Vigil, and the rain cancelling Wednesday's events. One of Eric's main goals was to get "as many RSOs involved, then you have a vested interest in Boken… if people were involved then they would bring in their friends."
