Shinesman, just one of several anime that will be showin at the Anime Club's Boken Marathon, is a short, two episode OAV that seems to offhandedly parody shows like Power Rangers. Shinesman takes place in modern day earth, where the Planet Voice has declared war on the planet for its natural resources. To see this through, the king of Planet Voice has sent Prince Sasaki and Seki, a strategist, to form a corporation that will take over the world. Through this business venture of epic proportions that is seemingly evil, they fund theme parks and popular TV shows, namely "Greatman." These shows are enjoyed by children everywhere. However, to counter this invasion, five heroes known as the Shinesman are here to protect the Earth.
Shinesman at first glance doesn't quite stand out. Its artwork is well-drawn, but is nothing out of the ordinary. Though once this anime gets going, it's a very enjoyable and very funny experience. The characters of the show are well developed considering the very short length of the OAV. They have funny personality quirks, such as the office girl that is often sent on errands to buy cigarettes and soda for her coworkers but usually ends up crushing or breaking the objects, and another worker who is overly obsessed with his car. The costumes of the Shinesman are very dull and odd colored, salmon pink and moss green to name a few, and the characters are quite aware of this as are the kids who make fun of them. Their arsenal is also entertainingly odd as well, and consists of items such as Tie Clip Bombs and Business Card Cutters. Though the plot of Shinesman is nothing new, the show does a wonderful parody of modern pop culture, and its ridiculousness makes it all the more humorous.
Shinesman will be shown this Friday, April 27th, in B118 during the Stevens Anime Club's Bobobo-bo Bo-boBoken 9PM - 7AM marathon. Other anime that will be show are Animation Runner Kuromi, Lupin 3rd Movie, Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, Gunsmith Cats, Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, and Megaman.
