Men's Lacrosse Clinches Top Seed for Skyline Playoffs with 18-10 Win over Merchant Marine

Senior attack Joe Van Sickle registered five goals and an assist as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team secured the top overall seed for the 2007 Skyline Conference Championship with an 18-10 victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. The Ducks locked up at least a share of the regular-season title with one conference game remaining, but thanks to head-to-head wins over USMMA and Montclair State University, Stevens is assured of being the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
Junior attack J.R. Oreskovich continued his recent hot streak with three goals and four assists as the ninth-ranked Ducks (11-2, 8-0 Skyline) won their sixth game in a row. Senior attack/midfielder Patrick Bailey, who scored nine goals against the Mariners in last year's conference title game, had three goals on Saturday. Senior midfielder Matt Althauser totaled four assists in the victory.
Senior goalkeeper Jack Dunderdale picked up his 11th win of the season as he made nine saves in net for the Ducks. Freshman midfielder Bobby Steinhauser had a game-high 12 ground balls and was 18-for-24 in faceoffs.
Merchant Marine (9-3, 6-1 Skyline), which had won five games in a row heading into Saturday's action, was led by senior attack Jim Flannery, who collected three goals in the game. Sophomore attack Brennan Dougherty finished with two goals and two assists. Junior midfielder Ryan Merritt registered two goals in the loss.
Sophomore defender Michael Condron finished with a team-high nine ground balls. Junior goalkeeper John Pagano made 17 saves for the Mariners.
Tied at 2-2 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter, Stevens scored four straight goals to open a 6-2 lead. Van Sickle scored two of the four goals - both off passes from Oreskovich - in that stretch. Leading 8-5 just over midway through the second quarter, Oreskovich and Bailey scored within 11 seconds of one another as the Ducks took control. Stevens led 11-6 at halftime.
Following a goal by Merritt that brought the Mariners to within 11-7 early in the third quarter, the Ducks scored five consecutive goals to blow the game open. Althauser assisted on the final three goals in that run as Stevens went on top 16-7 with 14:15 remaining in the fourth quarter.
For the game, the Ducks owned the advantage in shots (59-23) and ground balls (51-30). Stevens won 24 of 32 faceoffs on the day and was 15-for-18 (83.3 percent) in clearing attempts. USMMA was 17-for-30 (56.7 percent) in clears.
