Junior attack Liz Mather's goal with 3:10 left in regulation gave the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team its only lead of the game and proved to be the difference as the Ducks claimed a 9-8 win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent in a driving rain storm on Sunday at Columbia University's Baker Field in New York, N.Y. With the victory, the Ducks improved to 7-6 on the year.
Sunday's win also helped Stevens secure at least second place in the conference this season. With one Skyline game remaining, the Ducks stand at 4-1 in league play. Even if Stevens was to lose to Farmingdale State College on Saturday, the Ducks would hold on to second place thanks to head-to-head wins over Mount Saint Vincent, Manhattanville College and Kean University.
The Dolphins (4-6, 2-1 Skyline) started Sunday's game quickly as they scored three times in the opening 4:16 of the game to take an early 3-0 lead. Freshman attack Katie Lalli got the Ducks going as she scored off a pass from freshman midfielder Alyssa Pigott with 23:14 left in the first half. Lalli added another goal just under seven minutes later to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Trailing 4-2 with less than 13 minutes to go in the half, Stevens scored two straight goals. Junior attack/midfielder Kaitlyn Roes and Mather both found the back of the net to knot the score at 4-all. Mount Saint Vincent maintained a 5-4 lead at the break after freshman midfielder Katie Tucci scored with 9:19 left in the period.
After the Dolphins extended their lead to 6-4 on a goal by junior midfielder Maureen Payn, Lalli and Pigott both scored to tie the game at 6-6 with just over nine minutes to play. Mount Saint Vincent answered right back to open a 7-6 advantage, but freshman midfielder Kara Borzillo found Lalli for her fourth goal of the game as the Ducks tied the contest at 7-all.
With 4:58 remaining, junior midfielder Chanel Comis scored her third goal of the game to stake the Dolphins to an 8-7 lead. Freshman midfielder Fionuala Quinn netted the equalizer off a pass from Lalli with 3:48 left on the clock. Just 38 seconds later, Mather scored the game-winning goal for Stevens.
Lalli finished with four goals and an assist to lead all scorers. Mather had two goals. Pigott added a goal and an assist in the win. Sophomore attack Dana Perriello contributed one assist. Junior Stephanie Linder and sophomore Grace Sack split time in net for the Ducks. Linder and Sack made three and eight saves, respectively.
