Jennings Tosses Complete Game Shut Out as Baseball Splits with Manhattanville

The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team split a double header with Manhattanville College on Saturday afternoon. Despite dropping the first game 12-7, senior Adam Sandt broke the school record for career hits as he went 2-for-5 in the game with two runs scored. Sandt now has 185 hits, which surpasses David Rileys 183. Sophomore Bill Jennings tossed a complete game shut out to help the Ducks claim a 1-0 victory in the second game. The Ducks now stand at 12-13 overall and 8-2 in the conference, while Manhattanville is 11-13 overall and 6-3 in the league.
In the nine-inning opener, the Valiants took an early lead in the first frame. A walk and a passed ball helped junior Tom Verrengia across the plate, which gave Manhattanville a 1-0 advantage.
The Valiants jumped ahead 6-0 in the second inning with five runs scored on five hits including three doubles. Manhattanville added three runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 9-0.
Stevens made a run in the top of the sixth inning and scored four runs off four hits. Sandt and senior Ryan Birkenstock started the inning off with back-to-back singles. Senior Andrew Tesoriero reached on an error, which scored the Ducks first run of the game. Sophomore Alex Sota came into pinch hit and singled to score the second run of the inning. Senior Eric McCormick was hit by a pitch and sophomore Dan Silva singled to help score the Ducks third and fourth runs.
Stevens tacked on three more runs at the top of the seventh off three hits and three walks. Manhattanville finished with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to take the eventual 12-7 victory.
Sota finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Silva collected two RBIs in the game as well.
Junior Scott Picerno suffered the loss for the Ducks as he gave up six runs on five hits.
In game two, freshman Mark Rasulo produced the winning hit for the Ducks as he singled to drive in Silva who led off the fifth frame with a walk. That run proved to be the game-winner as Stevens took home the win.
Jennings picked up his third win of the season with a three hit
performance.
