Greetings to all!
I am writing this letter as a way of introduction of both myself and the duties of the Office of the Provost and University Vice President at the recommendation of several student leaders and other members of the Stevens Community. I have been a member of the Stevens community since September of 1983, as a Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering, Director of the Center of Environmental Engineering and most recently as the Dean of the Charles V. Schaefer Jr. School of Engineering. Twenty four years of having great fun!
As Stevens moves into a new era of creative endeavors, the position of the Provost was created to align the academic initiatives to the strategic positioning of the Institute. The Provost has a unique place in academic life working at the interface of faculty, students and administration. Specifically at Stevens, under the President, the Provost and University Vice President is the second most senior officer of the Institute. The Provost is the Chief Academic Officer, Budget Officer, and the President's deputy and principal adviser on all matters affecting the educational and academic operations of the Institute. The Provost is responsible for the formulation and administration of Institute academic policy, in consultation with the Academic Deans and the Faculty Council. In fulfillment of that role, the Provost identifies general goals and objectives for the overall academic programs of the Institute and advises, and acts as the representative of the President on academic matters affecting the faculty and students of the Institute. My responsibilities include direct oversight of undergraduate and graduate education, research, libraries, continuing education, and schools, centers and institutes on campus. In addition, the Provost and University Vice President, ensures in coordination with all other direct reports to the President, that all functions and operations of the Institute best support its academic mission.
I have culminated those responsibilities into four broad areas where initiatives are prioritized and action items are developed. Those are:
1. Financial foundation and institutional investments
2. Policies, processes and functions (both academic and administrative)
3. The academic and research enterprise
4. Increasing the footprint and the impact of the Institute
I will use this and other forums in the future to report to the community the progress we are making in those initiatives.
I will you all best of luck in the exams and a great summer!
