Google's 1st quarter earnings rose a staggering 69%, completely obliterating Wall Street forecasts. The expected earnings per share was $3.30, while the actual earnings came in at $3.68. This substantial difference was helped by a high revenue of $3.66 billion, which is almost $1.5 billion more than last year's revenue.
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates began offering $3 software to students. The effort, which is designed to combat piracy and cement Microsoft's position as software leader, is available only in developing countries, and will not be offered in the United States. It notably does not include newer software such as Windows Vista and Office 2007.
Valve Software's Steam platform, which is used by players of the online games Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat, was hacked this week. Although the hack currently looks to be limited to owners of Cyber Cafes, some sensitive financial information, including account balances and credit card numbers, has been leaked.
