Many ways exist for students to customize their study plan at Stevens. One way that might make the experience unique is to pursue a minor. According to Dean Larry Russ of Undergraduate Academics, "The whole idea behind a minor is to broaden your horizon."
In most cases, using general electives to fulfill some of the requirements for a minoris allowable. However, if a student wants to minor in Computer Science (CS), he or she may not use electives to fulfill the minor requirements. Additionally, any courses that are applied to the student's major do not apply to the minor. If a student takes CS 115 as a requirement for their major, they must take another CS course in place of it for the minor. Another instance of students not being able to use electives to fulfill minor requirements is in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. A student majoring in Electrical Engineering (EE) or Computer Engineering (CpE) may not use electives for a minor in EE or CpE.
Obtaining a minor in the humanities field requires a total of nine humanities classes. These nine humanities courses must cover three of the different fields, and five 300/400 level courses must be in the field of concentration. Students can minor in literature, philosophy, history, social science, or music. Many students currently at Stevens are required to take eight humanities to graduate; this makes obtaining a humanities minor easy because only one additional humanities course is required.
The following tables show how many additional courses are required for a minor. The top row represents the majors and the first column represents the minors. These numbers do not account for students using electives to fulfill minor requirements. Also, remember that each major may have different specializations that might affect how many courses are required for the different minors. The requirements for each major and minor are found in the course catalog, available online at http://www.stevens.edu/catalog.
Russ advises students who wish to pursue a minor to see a minor advisor in the department in which they are seeking a minor. Students pursuing a minor are required to file a minor study plan which can be found on the registrar's website at http://www.stevens.edu/registrar.
