Stevens hosted seniors in high school who have been accepted to Stevens for the fall 2007 academic year from April 13 to April 14. The prospective students stayed with "ambassadors" who are students who help the admissions office at various times during the year by hosting students discerning whether Stevens is right for them or not.
The weekend began Thursday night when the ambassadors crowded into the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Munching on pizza and mingling with their classmates, the Ambassadors waited to receive the name and telephone number of the student they would be hosting the next day. There were fewer female students than female hosts. While the male Ambassadors sometimes crowded several "pre-frosh" into their rooms, many female Stevens students were without a senior to host.
The seniors arrived at 8 a.m. Friday and joined their hosts before nine for several hours of classes and an introduction to college life. Several formal events were planned for the "pre-frosh," including a luncheon with administration and faculty in the Bissinger Room, tours of the various research facilities on campus, and a walking tour of Hoboken. The Office of Career Development also hosted an information session.
There were many events for the prospective freshmen to attend. Alpha Phi Omega's spring pledge class held a Hawaiian themed barbeque in Jacobus. The weekend also marked opening weekend for the Stevens Dramatic Society's performance of "Little Shop of Horrors." All student guests and hosts received complimentary tickets to the performance. The evening also contained a comedian and midnight bowling with pizza.
In addition to these structured events, several spontaneous events also occurred that captured the essence of life at Stevens. Most notably, the gentlemen of Hayden Hall and their hosts spilled out onto the lawn in front of the Schaffer Center for a Whiffle Ball game and other hosts brought out frisbees or participated in other outdoor activities.
Sleeping Bag weekends occur once a semester and Ambassadors also help with other admission events, including President's Tea. Anyone interested in joining the Ambassadors is welcome to contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions on the eighth floor of the Howe Center.
