Greek organizations Sigma Phi Epsilon and Phi Sigma Sigma recently held a teeter-totter charity event. From 3 p.m. Thursday to 3 p.m. Friday, 60 to 70 volunteers spent half an hour each teeter-tottering. This is the fourth consecutive year that Sigma Phi Epsilon has run the event since returning to Stevens. Proceeds from the event are donated to Youth AIDS, an international organization dedicated to raising awareness of the effects AIDS has on children in developing nations. Dan Silva '09 of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Kerri Polidore '09 of Phi Sigma Sigma were in charge of coordinating the event.
The Teeter-Totter has been a tradition at Stevens for at least 10 years according to several Sigma Phi Epsilon brothers. John Frega '07, a brother of Sigma Phi Epsilon and former managing editor of The Stute, was also running a grill for people who donated to get a free burger or hot dog. Silva said "Every year we do it to raise money for our national philanthropy." This was Silva's first year organizing the event and he said it was a "great way for two Greek organizations to get together and give back to a worthy cause." Last year, they had raised about $300 and are on track to surpass that amount this year.
