The 27th Annual New York International Orchid Show will spring into bloom from Wednesday, April 18 through Sunday, April 22 in the ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center. Unlike ordinary flower shows, which serve solely as a forum for purchasing potted plants, this show is also an exhibition of artistry and design. While there will be orchid vendors, the main draw of this event is the ability to see prize-winning designs up close. The designers of the displays make floral arrangements for many well-known Manhattan hotels and restaurants. This is an opportunity to see many different styles of floral design all in one place.
The show will include ikebana exhibits, tours with orchid experts, lectures, and workshops. An admission fee of five dollars is charged to view the exhibits. Many other arrangements will also be on display in nearby buildings. Exhibitors from as far away as Asia, Europe, and the United Kingdom will compete for the most-prestigious prizes in the field of orchid design, including an award that has been created for fragrant arrangements.
For those interested in digital photography, the lovely displays will provide more than enough content to keep you occupied for hours. There is also a volunteer registration form at www.manhattanorchid.com, which will require you to work but will also give you access to the show. Take time out of your busy schedules to enjoy the sights and smells of a New York tradition.
