Stevens has halted plans to renovate the remaining River Terrace Apartments in order to find ways to increase their bed capacities. 610 and 612 River Terrace were slated to be renovated over this coming summer and occupied in the fall. However the two buildings currently have a 17 bed capacity.
"17 beds isn't significant when you have 2,000 undergraduates and maybe 1,500 who [live on campus]," said Vice President of Facilities Henry Dobbelaar. "We want to make sure the money we're spending is wisely spent."
The university is exploring its options, which may include adding another story to the building. Proposed plans for the buildings would increase their capacity to 40 beds. Several zoning issues are related to the project, including the question of whether Hoboken's Land Use Board would need to be consulted. According to Dobbelaar the buildings have "sub-standard basements" and sit on several feet of rock which is expensive to remove.
