The Muslim Student Association (MSA) hosted three events during the week of April first, in honor of Islam Awareness Week. The week's three events focused on integrating Islam and its philosophies into everyday life.
On Monday, April 2nd, a speaker from The Dinar Standard spoke about "Science and Business in Islam." The Dinar Standard is a magazine that highlights business practices in the Muslim world. The speaker emphasized that the percentage of Muslims in the world is not proportional to the percentages of major Muslim-oriented businesses.
He also discussed how the teachings of the Koran, such as the need for ethical business practices, can be applied to American business practices.
Wednesday, April 4th, MSA sponsored a talk by world renowned speaker Sheikh Khalid Yasin. The event, "Islam: A Solution for World Peace," was sponsored by Mu Sigma Upsilon Multicultural Sorority.
Brian Dunican '09 who attended the event said, "Sheikh Khalid Yasin was willing to frankly address the problems facing the global community from both a religious and political standpoint. If more people were willing to speak so openly this world would be a better place."
Musa Franco spoke Thursday at a talk entitled "Prophet Muhammad: Do You Know This Man." A Muslim convert from Columbia who converted at age 14, he gave a brief biography about the Prophet. He tried to clarify misconceptions in the media about him and addressed topics such as the recent controversy regarding political cartoons and Muhammad. He also addressed topics such as why he married 11 wives and the various incorrect assumptions regarding his life and teachings.
MSA is a part of Campus Ministry, with offices on the second floor of Jacobus and weekly prayer meetings Fridays at 1 p.m. in the Jacobus conference room.
