Despite all of the trouble with the PATH, we decided to pop across the river for a tasty bite in the Village. On the recommendation of a longtime New Yorker, we dined at Trattoria Spaghetto on 232 Bleecker Street. Taking the PATH to 9th street puts you just blocks away. If you have time, we recommend heading over a few minutes early to poke around in the neighborhood shops.
The atmosphere of the restaurant was equally enjoyable as the surrounding area. The tables were close to each other, providing a cozy atmosphere, but far enough apart to give privacy. Each table had oil and vinegar in different bottles and whole dining room felt like a homey kitchen.
The service was fantastic! We were seated immediately in an intimate corner table next to the window. People-watching in New York is one of our favorite past times and we thoroughly enjoyed analyzing the characters who passed by. Our waiter was prompt and attentive. When asked what he recommended, he quickly informed us that the pork loin was excellent. We love waiters who are helpful and honest.
Kelsea, however, was feeling picky and wanted a custom pasta dish. She asked if the marinara sauce could be served on the gnocchi instead of on spaghetti. They were happy to accommodate her request. The gnocchi, to get technical, was a bit mooshier than usual. For those of you who are not die-hard Italian lovers like us, gnocchi is potato based pasta that comes in walnut-sized lumps. The marinara sauce was delicious - not too thin, not too thick and had that homemade sauce flavor that just hits the spot.
Mike chose salmon. This dish came with a baked potato, a garnish of veggies, and a side dish of pasta. The salmon was one of the largest cuts we have seen anywhere and was served a little rarer then at most places. For the side of pasta one could choose between three different sauces and just as many types of pasta. Mike decided on spaghetti with meat sauce. The sauce was filled with plenty of chop meat and complemented the salmon perfectly.
We finished off the evening with raspberry cheesecake and cappuccinos. The cheesecake was excellent. Two thin layers of light, flour cake and raspberry filling were embedded into the rich cheesecake, making the massive slice easy to finish. Raspberry sauce was drizzled over the dessert and decoratively on the plate. We definitely recommend splurging for dessert - possibly the tiramisu if you are not feeling in the mood for cheesecake. The cappuccinos were the perfect accompaniment to a perfect experience.
The prices were very reasonable. Entrées run at around $15 each. Dessert was $4 and the cappuccinos were $3. When you add on tip and travel, the trip is still only about $20 per person. We would definitely recommend taking a break from work some weekend and visiting Greenwich Village, with a stop at Trattoria Spaghetto.
