Five members of the Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team have qualified for the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Championships, which will be held on Saturday at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, N.J. The top six to eight fencers in each weapon will advance to the finals of the NCAA tournament, which is slated for March 22-25 at Drew University in Madison. The NCAA tournament for fencing is an open-division competition - meaning that the tournament field consists of student-athletes from Division I, II and III.
In foil, Stevens qualified two individuals for the national tournament - sophomores Ben Hochberg and Lowden Charles. Junior Matt Paragano made it in sabre. Freshman Steven DiPaola and junior Brian Weiner qualified in epee.
In 2005-06, both Hochberg and Paragano reached the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship. Hochberg earned a 25th-place finish and was eighth out of 11 fencers in Division III. Paragano was 18th overall and fourth in D-III.
