For most students at Stevens, March 3 was an ordinary Saturday. Three blocks to the west, however, a two-decade old cultural phenomenon took place.
The annual Saint Patrick's Parade occurs several weeks before the holiday and has bands, fifers, pipers, and drummers; this year was no exception. Traditionally, Hoboken bars open as early as 6 a.m. on parade day. This year however, the city council considered a resolution banning bars from opening until 11 a.m. While the resolution ultimately failed, community web site Hoboken411 reported that Police Chief LaBruno informed bar owners they would "face great scrutiny" if they opened before 11.
Regardless of the politics, Mayor Roberts and city council members appeared enthusiastic at the parade. "It's a great day for [the parade]. The parade is always a great day and I'm looking forward to it," Roberts told The Stute shortly before the parade commenced at 1:00.
Despite the parade's longstanding Hoboken tradition, few Stevens students attended the parade. Sleep was the most common reason cited for missing it, as well as a backlog of homework.
