Holmes Scores Four Goals as Men's Lacrosse Opens Season with 22-1 Win over Centenary

Freshman attack Josh Holmes scored four goals in his first collegiate game as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team routed Centenary College, 22-1, in the 2007 season-opener for both teams on Wednesday at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. The Cyclones (0-1) avoided being shut out by the 13th-ranked Ducks when junior attack Nate Small scored with 44 seconds remaining in the game.

Stevens (1-0) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Junior attack John Dolny opened the scoring 64 seconds into the contest when he received a pass from senior midfielder Mark Bielicky and beat sophomore goalkeeper Brian Troilo. Just over three minutes later, sophomore midfielder Eric Smith tallied an unassisted goal to put the Ducks in front 2-0.

Following a man-down goal by Bielicky, senior midfielder Joe Van Sickle found the back of the net. Bielicky scored again with 44 seconds left in the quarter. Dolny capped the scoring in the first stanza with his second goal of the game.

15 different players scored for the Ducks. Freshman midfielder Derek Straub and Smith had two goals apiece. Bielicky and Dolny combined for four goals and two assists. Freshman attack Alex Couture recorded four points on a goal and three assists. Freshman attack Dan Prakopcyk contributed a goal and two assists.

Freshman midfielder Bobby Steinhauser and senior defender Phil Jonat tallied five ground balls apiece to lead the Ducks. Steinhauser was 5-for-9 in face-off opportunities. Senior defender Steven Suggs won nine faceoffs. Senior goalkeeper Jack Dunderdale picked up the win as he made five saves in 30 minutes of action.

Sophomore midfielder Andrew Rogers posted six face-off wins for the Cyclones. Freshman defender Eddie Montalvo had a team-high four ground balls. Troilo took the loss as he allowed 14 goals while making nine saves.

Stevens out-shot Centenary 54-22 in the game. The Ducks owned a 47-23 advantage in ground balls. Stevens was successful in 21 of 25 clear attempts (84.0 percent). Centenary converted just 12 of 26 clears (46.2 percent).
