If you are looking for an artistic and tasteful movie, move along. Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny, starring Jack Black and Kyle Gass, is not sophisticated. It is not thought-provoking. And it certainly is not intellectual in the slightest. Rather, the musical details the fictional creation of the band Tenacious D. Yet with all that being said, the movie is truly enjoyable provided you do not take it seriously, and you are willing to allow yourself to laugh.
The movie begins with JB, played by Jack Black, detailing his early childhood in a strict Christian family in which Rock and Roll is the music of the devil, and everyone who listens to it are enemies of the faith. Needless to say, this causes JB much anguish and lays down the foundation on which the movie will progress. From here, the movie fast forwards to the fateful meeting between JB and KG who will eventually form the band, Tenacious D.
This movie is not to be taken seriously, by anyone, anywhere. Rather, it is a perfect example of extremely hot and cold humor. When the jokes are funny, they are over the top and incredible, but when they bomb, they are nauseating. Fortunately, the good jokes more than outnumber the horrendous ones. At only 93 minutes, spending the time to see the jokes is worth while. Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny can be seen in Burchard on Sunday March 4 at 8:30 p.m. and on Monday and Tuesday at 9 p.m. Final Score: 7.5/10
