On Sunday, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team closed out its dual-meet season with a solid showing at New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, N.J. The Ducks finished the day with a 3-2 mark as they earned victories against Lafayette College (22-5), Cornell University (17-10) and the United States Military Academy (19-8). Stevens lost tough contests to Drew University (15-14) and Haverford College (18-10). The match against Drew featured 10 bouts that ended up 5-4 in favor of the Rangers.
"We finished off the regular season with a bang," head coach Mika'il Sankofa said. "A total of 11 very close bouts separated us from going 5-0 versus being 3-2. I feel that the team has really bonded over the last few weeks, and everyone from our veterans to our freshmen has stepped up."
Stevens received a solid performance out of sophomore foilist Lowden Charles at NJIT. Charles posted a 13-1 mark on the day. Sophomore Ben Hochberg finished with a 12-2 record in the foil. As a whole, the foil squad registered 32 victories for the Ducks. In the sabre, junior Matt Paragano led the way by winning 12 of 16 bouts. Freshman Steven DiPaola earned nine victories in the epee.
"This year's dual-meet season was all about providing experience for our program," Sankofa noted. "Our participation against Division I programs at the New York University Invitational was pivotal toward providing power-ranking bouts for some of our top athletes, which will improve their chances of being selected to the NCAA finals. Meanwhile, the competition at Johns Hopkins provided some great experience for our developing freshmen."
Sankofa went on to add, "We are stronger in our conference than our record might indicate, and I am very confident that we will have some outstanding performances at the conference championships."
Stevens, which is now 7-14 on the year, will return to action at the Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association Championship on February 25 in Williamsburg, Va.
