Since the weather was still chilly this weekend, we again opted for a restaurant close to campus. Margaritas, located at the corner of 8th Street and Washington, was an obvious choice. The front windows of the small restaurant welcomed guests with the warm glow of white Christmas lights. The interior was as cozy as the façade suggested. Smiling faces crammed into wooden booths lined the walls and Valentine's Day decorations still hung from the ceiling, creating a casual, comfortable family setting.
We sat towards the back of the restaurant, our conversation floating over the backdrop of clanking silverware from the nearby kitchen. We were half expecting to be rushed into ordering since the tiny restaurant was already almost at capacity at 5:30 in the evening, but our waiter took his time getting us drinks and asking for our order. The wait staff was pleasant and helpful and our food and check were both brought to the table in a timely manner.
We started with two appetizers: garlic bread covered in melted mozzarella and Caesar salad. The garlic bread was very tasty and we toyed with the idea of stopping by for an after dinner snack some other time. The Caesar salad was simple, yet well prepared and a good size for splitting between two people.
Margaritas' pasta is all homemade, so we both ordered pasta entrées, although the other dishes we saw brought out looked equally as appetizing. Kelsea ordered rigatoni in meat sauce. The pasta was delicious and the sauce was packed with meat. The presentation was lovely, with a dollop of feta cheese in the middle contrasting the taste, color and texture of the rest of the dish.
Mike went for the Fettuccine al Fredo. The long thin pasta was as wonderful as Kelsea's rigatoni. The al Fredo sauce boasted a unique flavor, however it was really thin. The watery sauce was good for dipping the garlic bread, but did not cling to the pasta well. This dish was a little smaller then Kelsea's, but a perfect size after the large appetizers.
All the desserts on the menu sounded amazing, however we only had room in our stomachs to share one. We ended up going for the milkshake cheesecake. The chocolate cheesecake was extra fluffy and served with a mountain of whipped cream. The two appetizers, entrees and dessert came out to a little over $30. We would recommend Margaritas, they also take duckbills!
