This week due to the extremely cold weather, we wanted a place really close to campus where we could relax for a while. This being said, we chose Frozen Monkey cafe. Located at 526 Washington Street, Frozen Monkey fit our criteria perfectly. We were seated at a comfortable table in the back and menus were given promptly.
We decided to start with some tea to fight off the cold. We both ended up choosing raspberry flavored. The tea wasn't anything special, however the selection was decent and plenty of decaf options were available. Our server was a bit slow at taking our orders but eventually got around to it.
Kelsea, just coming from a basketball game, felt like having a large bowl of soup. She chose Italian Chicken, one of the three soups of the day. The soup came out piping hot with chunks of dipping bread on the side. The soup was delicious, packed with chicken, and the perfect meal size. For dessert, Kelsea decided to try a cupcake since they always look so good at Frozen Monkey. What a let down! The cupcake did not taste good at all. The swirly pink icing that looked so appealing tasted pretty much like cardboard. The consistent of the cake was not quite right either - a little too dense. Frozen Monkey claims to use the recipe of Magnolia's, the popular cupcake stop in NYC, however Frozen Monkey's baker obviously went wrong. Kelsea would recommend opting for a cookie if you are a sweets lover. From previous experience, she can also vouch for the ice cream.
Mike decided to have a panini sandwich, which comes with a free cup of soup on Mondays. He chose the pesto chicken panini with a side of warm lentil soup. The cup of soup was much smaller than the bowl Kelsea ordered. The soup was very hearty with lots of delicious lentils. Kelsea and Mike were impressed that the café offered two soups of such good quality. The panini was served hot with pickles and a portion of bean salad on the side. The pesto went well with the warm chicken. Slices of red pepper and fresh mozzarella made this dish a smash.
Frozen Monkey features a unique dining room with abstract seating arrangements and interesting artwork. The café is a perfect place to sit and chat with friends without the background noise of a coffee grinder. This light dinner totaled only $20 with the panini/soup combo being a mere $6.50. If you're looking for a place close to campus for a quick meal, or just don't feel like walking in the cold, Frozen Monkey is the place to go.
