The new semester begins with two fresh faces appearing in the Office of Student Life. Charles Amerson and Erin Selby both joined the Stevens community in December as Assistant Directors of Student Life.
Before coming to Stevens, Amerson worked at North Carolina A&T State University. At Stevens, Amerson will work with student leaders on a project to renovate the student organization space in Jacobus. "I'm very excited about this project because it originated as a suggestion from the students," Amerson said. He hopes there will continue to be student participation throughout its completion. Amerson also noted that he will work closely with the Entertainment Committee and Orientation.
Selby said the differences between Stevens and her previous places of employment are striking. She has worked at Rutgers, Gibbs College and Hudson Community College. She says, "Students here seem much more autonomous. Here the money is just handed to the students…at a state school there is paperwork for every dollar." Selby mentioned the ability of the students to make and present their budgets means there are fewer forms for any one person and everyone accomplishes more.
Selby manages the bowling alley, works with RSOs and helps with graduate student activities. "We're looking at a very active graduate calendar," she says. Planned for the semester are Pizza and Beer mixers in Hayden Lounge, a ski trip and a trip to see Tarzan on Broadway. She also hopes to create more events geared towards the women on campus, working with the Lore El Center and sororities.
Amerson is anxious to meet the student leaders. "You students are 99.9% of the job. I couldn't do this unless I had your input…I've met some so far…but for everyone else I think I'll have to knock on doors and find them in the cafeteria," he said.
"I've eaten in Pierce a few times," Selby remarked. "I think it's important not to just talk to the leaders and the people who go to the events, but the people who don't go to the events. Why don't they go…what can we do to make things better?"
Both Amerson and Selby are in the Office of Student Life on the tenth floor of the Howe Center.
