Ferry service from the Hoboken Terminal between New York and New Jersey has been a very useful and integral source of transportation since the terminal's opening in 1907. "Hoboken Ferry Terminal is a vital transportation organ to this region, connecting thousands of people to economic centers, entertainment venues and jobs in Hudson County and in lower Manhattan," State Senator Kenny said in a NJ Transit Press Release from April 29, 2005.
The ferry terminal holds a great deal of forgotten beauty, such as a majestic foyer now weathered with age, stained glass ceilings hidden in dirt, crumbling pillars and, of course, a beautiful view of the Manhattan skyline. Ferry service from Hoboken was discontinued in 1967 because of the lack of demand. However, ferry service was restored in 1989. Restoration of this historic terminal is already underway.
The first phase of this project, which included repairs to the sub and superstructure of the terminal, began in 2004 and ended in spring of 2005. The second phase of construction, which includes construction of five of six original ferry slips, more structural repairs, repairs to the roof, restoration of the skylights and restoration of the interior, is expected to be completed in spring of 2007. The NJ Transit is also planning to build a replica of the clock tower that was originally part of the 1907 design. The entire restoration of the Hoboken Ferry Terminal and the ferry slips is expected to cost about $125 million.
