Women's Tennis Hands Mount Saint Mary its First Loss

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (October 8, 2006) - In a match-up of undefeated teams, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis rolled to an impressive 9-0 victory over Skyline Conference rival Mount Saint Mary College on Sunday at Cronomer Park in Newburgh, N.Y. With the win, the Ducks improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The Blue Knights fell to 4-1 (0-1 Skyline) with the loss.
In doubles play, junior Dana Bacalla (Portland, Ore.) and senior Jin Bai (Edison, N.J.) cruised to an 8-0 win over junior Gina Trapini (Walden, N.Y.) and freshman Laura Wolons (Middletown, N.Y.) in the first flight. At second doubles, sophomores Whitney Bender (Tijeras, N.M.) and Rebecca Ryba (Old Brookville, N.Y.) posted an 8-1 win over sophomore Rachel Abad (Honolulu, Hawaii) and freshman Kimberley Cortes (Holliswood, N.Y.). In the closest match of the day, junior Vandita Shah (Bloomfield, N.J.) and freshman Tiffany Jow (Aberdeen, N.J.) defeated sophomore Jamie Sanchez (Bergenfield, N.J.) and freshman Caitlin Giordano (Walden, N.Y.) by the score of 9-8 (8-6) at third doubles.
Bacalla registered a 6-3, 6-0 win over Trapini at No. 1 singles. Bender dropped a total of two games in her 6-1, 6-1 victory over Cortes in the second flight. Bai was victorious (6-2, 6-1) against Abad at No. 3 singles. Ryba dropped the first set then rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Giordano at fourth singles. Jow was forced to three sets before prevailing with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory against Wolons at No. 5 singles. Junior Jacqueline Carbone (Basking Ridge, N.J.) earned a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 win over Sanchez in the sixth singles position.
Coming up on Wednesday, Stevens will host Richard Stockton College in non-conference action at 3:30 p.m. Then, on Saturday, the Ducks will have a chance to wrap up the No. 1 seed for the Skyline Conference tournament when they host Manhattanville College at 1 p.m.
