This past weekend, the Stevens Yacht Club competed in the McCurdy Open, a regatta in Delaware. The regatta was two days with seven races for the A Division and six races for the B Division. The A team was led by Skipper Efe Kuyumcu and shifted between Sean Payne and Matt Gordons as crew. The B Team skipper was Marc Castells and crew was Andrew Seguin. Six other schools participated in the regatta: University of Delaware, University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State, Maryland, Lehigh and Fordham.
The races started on Saturday around 10 a.m. with very cold and windy weather. The wind was around 20 mph, but it was shifty, making the race very difficult and tactical. The B Team completed four races and the A Team completed six races. The B Team made a consistent effort for second place, but ranked third overall at the end of the first day. The A Team had an unfortunate start and capsized in the first leg of the first race, finishing fifth. They worked their way to the top, getting various results in the next five races as fourth, third and, in the last race, second place.
Sunday was a very strong day for the Yacht Club. The weather was sunny with very calm winds around 5 mph. The B Team consistently held their ground, attaining third place for two races. The A Team continued their momentum to finish the last race of the regatta in first place. In the end, Stevens came home in third place, missing second place by only five points.
