The Gear and Triangle Society, with the main ideals of Honor, Fellowship and Spirit, was established in 1919 as a non-secret, honorary society, exclusive to Stevens. The foremost reason for the society was to honor dedicated undergraduate sophomores, juniors and seniors who were leaders in extracurricular activities. According to the 1922 edition of the Link, there are seven aims of the society. These objectives include the uniting of leaders to represent the best standards of college life, encouraging the establishment of the Honor System in technical colleges, maintaining a strict adherence to the principles of the Honor System, encouraging a spirit of loyalty and initiative, promoting democratic fellowship, encouraging more participation in Varsity Sports and other activities and broadening the education and views of its members.
At the time that the idea of Gear and Triangle was conceived there was a quasi-secret society called Khoda. Khoda is similar to Gear and Triangle in that it honors those students who dedicate time to undergraduate activities. Since Khoda was a secret society, the founders of Gear and Triangle felt that a non-secret society with the same philosophies needed to be established.
When Gear and Triangle was first established in 1919, Stevens was an all-male engineering college. Commencing in the 1970s with the admittance of women to Stevens, the Gear and Triangle Society began to honor women as well. The society is also open to individuals who are non-engineering majors. In recent years, several Business and Technology students were honored for their contributions to the Stevens community. Currently a student can nominate himself/herself or another student to the Dean's Activities Honor List. The students who are accepted to the Dean's Activities Honor List and have completed four semesters will be considered for membership in the Gear and Triangle Society. For the returning sophomores who are on the Dean's Activities Honor List but not eligible for membership in Gear and Triangle, an award was established in 1991 to recognize their contributions to Stevens during their freshman year. Nominations for the Dean's Activities Honor List close on Friday, October 13. The nomination forms are located online at http://www.stevens.edu/student_life/List.htm and can be submitted through e-mail or in person to Student Life on the 10th floor of the Howe Center.
The Gear and Triangle Society acknowledges individuals who work for the betterment of their school community. The association with fellow school leaders with the same ideals of Honor, Fellowship and Spirit will influence members not only in their school years but will serve as a foundation for successful careers after graduation.
