A group of students drawn from across the Stevens Institute of Technology spectrum recently took advantage of an opportunity to develop their leadership skills and abilities in a three-day training retreat sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA). Held annually by the SGA, approximately 27 students, representing approximately 50 of the Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) of SIT, took part in the Student Leadership Retreat in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. The retreat was held from October 6 to October 8. The students left on the night of October 6 and returned the following Sunday. Friday evening started with a talk by R. Camper Bull, partner in Armiger International, a boutique management training and development firm, and various icebreakers designed to get the group comfortable with each other.
On Saturday morning, the students divided into 3 small groups and took on the low ropes courses. After the ropes courses, they enjoyed a light lunch and listened to Mike Ackerbauer, innovation manager for high performance computing software information development at IBM. After Ackerbauer, the students participated in team building exercises such as the "helium hula hoop" in which they had to work as a team to keep a hula hoop steady using only one finger. Saturday night bought multiple seminars on leadership and how to better SIT through their participation, conducted by e-Rotaract Club of Rotary Dist. 7490, SIT's chapter of the International Rotary Organization. On Sunday Morning, a workshop run by Amani Mohsen, and Lisa Vitale of the Gear & Triangle Honor Society followed the seminar. The workshop focused on mission statements, vision statements and three qualities of team leadership: community, efficiency and efficacy. After lunch, the students returned to SIT.
