For over 100 upper-class students, September 23rd was move in day. A month into the fall semester, the last River Terrace Apartments were opened for students. After delays in construction and weeks of uncertainty, the residents gladly left the Sheraton Suites in Weehawken where they have been living since school began.
The opening of the apartments ends a period of stress and confusion for the residents. Shuttle buses have been bringing the students from their hotel on 19th street up to campus for classes and school events, much to their inconvenience. The commute frustrated many residents, who freely complained about the commute, which ate away at their already limited time, and the unreliability of the shuttle bus to and from campus. Another complaint by residents housed in the hotel was the lack of laundry facilities: only one machine was available to all the displaced residents.
The move marks the beginning of a new chapter in the River Terrace buildings. Formerly, 600-606 River Terrace housed office space and "technology incubators," or storage for various startup projects. Though the apartments are livable, the residents' problems are far from over. Final renovations have yet to be completed, including some issues with plumbing. "They are working on the stairs and they have to fix the showers because they flood," said Krissy Wolf, a resident at 600 River St. Despite these problems, River Street is within walking distance of campus and that alone is certainly a welcome change.
