School spirit was rife at this Wednesday's volleyball match against NYU at the Canavan Arena. Unfortunately, the high level of enthusiasm in the stands was not enough to ensure a victory over the NYU Violets.
Despite several outstanding plays and individual performances by the Stevens Ducks, they were edged out in three games by their rivals from across the river. After trailing 27-17 in the first game, the Ducks rallied to score seven consecutive points. The second and third games followed a similar pattern, with the Ducks falling behind early, then rallying towards the end. The final scores of the three games were 30-27, 30-24, and 30-23.
Sophomore Melanie Volk ended the match with a total of thirteen kills, seven blocks and six digs. Junior Dawn Herring, who was serving during the seven-point streak of the first game, had a total of ten kills and ten digs. Sophomore Melissa Rhode finished with twenty-three assists and ten digs, while Summer Hamilton, also a sophomore, posted nine kills and three blocks.
After this game, the Women's Volleyball record stands at 7-3. Their home game will be on Saturday, September 16 as they face Maritime College at 10:00AM, followed by SUNY Old Westbury at 2:00PM. The next Duck Country event will be the Stevens Cross Country Invitational on Friday, September 22 at Liberty State Park.
