Petty is now in his thirtieth year as a Heartbreaker and is still delivering an outstanding product as a solo musician. His newest release, Highway Companion, is an album that continues his dynasty of simply excellent rock tracks. This album has an edge that only Petty himself can deliver.
Produced by fellow Traveling Wilbury Jeff Lynne, Highway Companion has a vintage and unique feel. The album continues to prove Lynne's brilliance as a musician and continues to demonstrate the great music that him and Petty can bring to the world.
"Saving Grace," can be seen as a John Lee Hooker-esque kind of song that is a perfect opener for the album. The song "Turn This Car Around" is something that could definitely be put into Tom Petty's library of classics, for its style is reminiscent of his song "Into the Great Wide Open." "Flirting with Time" is also a great representation of Petty's songwriting talent and its style is appropriate for the album's summer release. Now mind you, these three songs are only a fraction of what the rest of the album is like.
Highway Companion is definitely a great album to just sit back and listen to, especially in the car as a "companion" for the road.
