"Its my first real day of college and already I'm bangin' on drums!" exclaims freshman Tim Sigler when asked about his first day of college. Tim Sigler of course is participating in the Performing Arts pre-orientation event, a 3 day program where students put together their own performance and then act it out for the freshman class during orientation. And Tim isn't alone in his excitement. Stevens Institute of Technology is proud to welcome everyone in the class of 2010 through its gates and into the warm arms of what President Hal Raveche called "an extremely tight-knit community."
The O-team certainly had fun at the Karaoke Night pre-O event, where the entire team rushed up on stage to perform a song with which most of them were unfamiliar. Bowling night, which ran simultaneously with the karaoke, also was a big hit with the freshmen.
Orientation had some differences from previous years. Pre-orientation events lasted 3 days, which the O-leaders reported as promoting more bonding between the students. The Performing Arts event had time to compile what has been reported as an exceptionally funny script for their skits, which will be made evident when they take place on Friday night. Many upperclassmen will remember the computer seminar that every student had to complete before they were allowed to claim their freshman laptop. However, this year students will be able to obtain their computer with minimal hastle and no lab; most of the documentation for the computers is available on the IT department's wiki site and according to staff the helpdesk will be overstaffed to accomodate any increase in questions from the student body.
Many of the "staples" of the Stevens Orientation experience have not changed, however. As always, the O-leaders were incredibly helpful during the move-in, and it was unusual to see a freshman have to lift even one package-a posse of leaders was ready to unload students the minute they arrived. O-leaders were even seen helping to organize freshmen's rooms.
