Jacobus Hall, at Stevens Institute of Technology, was built 70 years ago, in 1937, in memory of David Schenck Jacobus and his many years of service to the Institute. It was originally built as a residence hall but in 1980 was converted to a women's dormitory to accommodate the first freshmen women class.
Owen Flanagan, a professor of philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience from Duke University visited Stevens last week to talk about his take on the meaning of life. His presentation began with the introduction of what he has dubbed the 'really hard problem:' How can a three pound lump of matter which we call our brain be responsible for our compassion, optimism, and subjectivity? He, despite some in his field he calls the 'Mysterians,' believes that we as a society will eventually be able to comprehend the mind.

A country's independence from a colonial empire was celebrated this past Friday night and it was not the US. Malaysia, a nation of federate states in the South Pacific, celebrates 50 years of independence from the British Colonial Empire this year. Rejoicing the Anticipated and Yearned Anniversary or RAYA for short, held in Pierce Dining Hall on Friday night was how the Malaysian Students Association (MaSA) at Stevens Institute of Technology proudly displayed their country's rich culture and diverse heritage.
