This year Stevens held its premier music event, titled "Bokenstock," as an all-day event featuring eight bands and capped off with fireworks. The event was held on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the Palmer Lawn. The performances were split over two stages, one assembled in front of the Samuel C. Williams Library, and the other was a stage borrowed from Hudson County for the day.
Bokenstock is one of the largest events scheduled for this year's Boken, and as such three groups collaborated on the event. WCPR, the Boken Committee, and SUMAC all pitched in to make the event a huge success.
Eight bands were booked to play at the event. Of these eight bands, there were three that had Stevens students as members: Los Pocos Locos, Iron Hills, and The Title. Los Pocos Locos opened on the library stage, and were followed by Iron Hills. Return 2 Sender opened the other stage later in the afternoon. Good Old War and The Dear Hunter played the middle of the show as students came out to enjoy the shortly-lived nice weather. The Title played while Sodexho and Pierce Dining Hall held a barbecue on the lawn instead of the standard indoor dinner, and was the last band to play on the library stage. Finally, Envy of the Coast headlined the event, drawing a good crowd after the dinner ended. The Nerds finished the show in their trademark style and hoedown rendition of "American Pie."
In addition to the musical performances, several corporate courtesy tents were set up and gave away promotional material, including Frisbees that were used on the Schaeffer Lawn for most of the afternoon. During the earlier hours, the Pan-Hellenic Council held a clothing swap, run by the sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon, Omicron Pi, and Phi Sigma Sigma. The event started with approximately one hundred items to be swapped, and the remaining hundred were donated to a local homeless shelter.
Finally, the first day of Boken was capped off with a firework display from the River Lot at 9:00 PM. The fifteen minute display could be seen from most of campus, and it looked like most of the student body present on campus stopped their activities to see the show. With all that happened on April 9th, the first day of Boken was a huge success, and a sign that Boken 30 will continue on to be one of the best.
