Delta Phi Epsilon kept a tradition going last week with the annual "Castle Point King" variety show on Friday, March 28. This year's theme, "Pop Rocks," hearkens back to the 1990s when boy bands were cool and the Spice Girls were all over the radio. The charity event, which benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, featured dance routines, songs performed live on stage, and for the first time, a magic act.
This year there was a large cast of eight "knights," mostly coming from the fraternities on campus. Among them were Mohamed "Mo" Abuouf of Sigma Phi Epsilon, Nicholas Esposito of Alpha Sigma Phi, Nicolas Martinez of Sigma Nu, Benjamin Scatuorchio of Delta Tau Delta, and John Zaleski of Theta Xi. Also featured were three performers from campus organizations: George Blazeski of Alpha Phi Omega, Kieran Walters of PULSE, and Paul Kazalaski of the Stevens Dramatic Society; Kazalski promoting the Dramatic Society's upcoming show.
The main part of the show was for each knight to showcase themselves in a video and through a live performance. Many of the performances were uproariously funny or showcased interesting talents. These included multiple dance numbers, musical "rick-rolls," (where what started as one show randomly switched to another,) a giant banana, and the aforementioned magic show. The videos, always a more memorable part of Castle Point King, did not disappoint this year. The videos ranged from a mock-documentary about a "Rock Band" based rock band, to a 24-style thriller about preparing for Castle Point King, and included a parody of "The Office" and a fake advertisement for the "Cyberfuel" energy drink.
After all of the videos and performances, the eight knights were asked to escort the graduating seniors of Delta Phi Epsilon in formal evening wear, on which they were judged. Following this evaluation, four "prince" awards and a single "Castle Point King" award were given out. Nicolas Martinez won "Castle Point King," while Benjamin Scatuorchio won "Prince of Talent," Mohamed Abuouf won "Prince of Smiles," both selected by the judges, and Nick Esposito won "Prince of the People," awarded for winning the coin war in the days leading up to the event, and "Prince of Delta Phi Epsilon," which was voted on by the sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon.
